Preliminary designs of 60-GHz linearly- and circularly-polarized microstripline-fed microstrip antennas are performed, and the prototype antennas are implemented and tested. The integration with the switched beam-former developed in the sub-project 4 is now in progress. The series-fed rectangular patch array antenna is studied in the linear polarization case, while the sequentially-rotated microstrip patch array antenna and the fractional spiral array antenna are investigated in the circular polarization case. Both the simulation and measurement results show that these antennas possess the characteristics that meet the specifications defined by the main-project and the sub-project 1. Moreover, they can be integrated with the 4´4 switched beamformer designed by the sub-project 4. The measured impedance and radiation performances for the prototype antennas agree well with those simulated. According to the analysis of antenna array, four switched beams within 120° are achieved. The effect of mutual coupling among the antenna elements is also included for optimizing the matching condition of the 4´4 Bulter matrix. The correlation coefficient of the four-element antenna array is calculated for practical wireless system design. The key techniques used to design these antennas have also been employed to develop various microstrip antennas with unique characteristics that are particularly useful in many wireless communication applications. |

Powen Hsu (許博文) was born in Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C., in 1950. He received the B.S. degree in physics from the National Tsing-Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, R.O.C., in 1972, the M.S. degree in physics from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1976, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in 1978 and 1982, respectively. From 1982 to 1984, he was with ITT Gilfillan, Van Nuys, CA, where he was engaged in research and development pertaining to radar antenna systems. In 1984, he joined the faculty of the National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C., where he is currently a Professor with the Electrical Engineering Department. From 1992 to 1995, he was the Department Chairperson there. In August 1997, he established the ninth college, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, in the National Taiwan University, and served as the first Dean of the College until 2003. His current research interests include the design and analysis of slot antennas, microstrip antennas, RFID tag antennas, and microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits. |
